I suck at Math!
It isn't a secret around here that I am an avid reader. I could go on for days about books! I even have a whole other blog just for that, A Novel Experience
But, when it comes to math, I leave that one to the hubs.
He definitely is Daddy to the rescue because all of our daughters would be in after school tutoring if it was left up to me for their math skills.

This quote:

"Your math homework looks like I need to make a quick trip to the liquor store!"

Yes, that pretty much sums up(ha! math) exactly how it goes when I am left to assist in math homework!

I mean I was a cashier, so I can whip out change and figure up that extra 20% off like nobody's business, but after that I'm lost. I can't do fractions or finding X or Y or whatever letter they've decided was a good letter to lose inside of a math problem! Is this math or a mystery to solve?

I'm not sure why, but I keep picturing myself as Charlie Brown. I'm sitting in math class and all I hear is "Wah, Wah!" You know, the teacher that is talking and you are getting nothing of what she is saying.

That's me.

Usually, a night of the kids asking for my help goes something like this:

Daughter: "Mom, I need help with this math worksheet."

Me: "Ok, what does it say to do?" (I do try to help)

Daughter: "I don't know. I have to find the whole number for problems 1-20."

Me: (looking at the problems) "Uhh, hmmm. Well... Is that it?"(pointing at a number)

Daughter: "No, Mom. That is the problem. I have to find the answer!"

Me: "Umm, yea. That's a problem. Let's wait until Daddy gets home, k?"

What's that quote?

Momma needs a margarita!

Yup, that's the one!

Stop the Bullying! My kid is NOT a sasshole!

Bullying is never ok!

Did you know that name calling IS bullying?

I am one to rarely say that I HATE something. Sure, there are tons of parents that do or say something that irritates me.

The way they put their child on display like a trophy or how they know the best and only way to do xyz.(That's a whole other post!)

BUT, this one phrase, name, whatever you want to call it, I absolutely HATE!

Sasshole:

Sassy-A**hole

(I'm sure you can figure out the definition)

Why? Just why does anyone think this is cute or appropriate?

I don't get it!

This isn't like calling Richard Smith III, little Ricky or junior

This isn't calling your daughter Mini me or Boo Boo.

This is NAME CALLING!

This is labeling your child negatively!

And before you say "Oh, it's just a nickname between us." or "I only say it around close family."

Wrong! We all see your Facebook, IG, Twitter...We see you with the "Sasshole" T-shirt!

We see and we know. It is every where. You're spewing it all over social media.

And, maybe...maybe you really did start it innocently. Maybe it was the catchy phrase that you heard and followed trend.

My sympathies for your ignorance.

The reality is, if you have used or continue to use this phrase as a "term of endearment" for your little one, 

YOU are being a bully.

YOU are the one labeling them.

YOU are the one causing damage to them.

YOU are the one showing them that it is ok to be called derogatory names and to be mentally abused!

There have been several articles and studies done on this.

Do you remember being called names?

The weird one. The fat one. The poor kid. The dumba**. 

How did that impact you then and now? Still today? Get a little tense being reminded of those names?

Sure you do! It hurt!

I bet it would really make that Mama Bear growl if she found out someone called HER baby any of those names!

So, WHY are you doing it to them????

You are sending them mixed messages!

"Don't let anyone EVER call you names or make fun of you!"

"I love you sooo much my little Sasshole."(xoxo)

See that?

Now, in 10/15 years when little Timmy grows up and moves in on your little sasshole, She is all willing to hear any hurtful names he calls her because,... you did. Her loving parent who only wishes the best for her.She is now in a mentally abusive relationship...because it's just words; just a name.

Be a better example. Practice what you preach!

And stop name calling your children!

We are the first to set an impression and example for our children! Do it wisely!

What's That Quote? #16

Welcome Monday!
I really need a good, inspiring quote to get me going today.  One to remind myself that messing up, or having a failure; doesn't make me a failure!
I know we have all been there. Felt that way.
Even the simplest...or stupidest thing we do wrong. We instantly come down on ourselves and think.."I'm such a failure."
We have to stop thinking this way! It doesn't do us any good! It certainly doesn't give me any encouragement or want to do better, try again, or keep going.
How about you?
So, for the sake of all our sanity, let's try this approach!

How do you deal with failure?

I know there are way too many things we consider a failure to cover them all.

I know some people consider even the tiniest mistakes to be complete failures. Others focus more on the bigger issues. 

For me, failure usually means a loss. Something I either wanted and never got or something I had or had achieved and lost later on.

A few years ago we lost our house due to a foreclosure. It was devastating for us as a family. We struggled, we tried everything we knew how to do, everything we were advised to do, we prayed endlessly; and we still lost our home.

That was a huge failure!

As adults and parents we felt we had failed each other and our children.

We had not given them security and a home. Those are kind of necessities as a parent. 

We were lost. How could we possibly fix this?

How would we continue to show our children that we weren't failures when that is exactly how we felt?

We had to pack up everything we owned. Box up pictures and memories. We had to downsize and make our children give up things that they wanted. We all had to make serious sacrifices.

We were blessed enough to be able to move in with family and try to reclaim our roles. We had to learn and teach to be grateful for what we did have and what we could have again.

Now, three years later we still aren't where we want to be. We have acquired a new normal. It isn't where we want to be, but we have definitely learned from this and we are continuously moving forward. We are doing research, practicing patience, and taking a slower road to get there. We are learning together. Re-drawing out our want and wish list.

We are turning this into an opportunity to begin again...more intelligently!

The Kindness Rocks Project
What is it anyway?

The mission is:
One message at just the right moment can change someone's entire day, outlook, life

It all started when Megan Murphy was walking along the beach looking for a sign. A message to help her decide what to do.
With a sharpie in her pocket, rocks all around her, and an idea, she decided to not wait for a message but instead...leave one. A message of kindness for someone to find.

The Kid Edition:

I really wanted to do this with all my kids and niece and nephew. We could all use a chance to be kind to others. I wanted to make this as kid-friendly as possible and still teach them the lesson I was aiming for.

My main approach was getting them to think of ways that each of them could be kind to someone.

The most popular answer was "I can share."

When you are age 3-7, that is a huge act of kindness!

Starting off I had already gathered and cleaned as many "good" rocks as I could find in our yard and garden.(Thankfully, when my husband roto-tilled, it turned up tons of rocks!) We used what we had and they were all different sizes and shapes.

I knew the kids would need some help and prompting to figure out what their "message" would be.

We talked a lot about ways we are kind and things that make us feel happy.

I love their answers. Everything from Spiderman to Mom's cooking.

They shared that they felt kind when we love each other and when they play with their friends.

We decided instead of just using words as a message, it was easier(and fun) to really let them paint and show what kindness and being happy means to them.

Sometimes it was a bright color, a pattern or a rainbow.

Some they made into food or a character they like. Some painted trees or nature.

I love how they are all so unique and personal.

Isn't that kind of the point? Shouldn't our Kindness rocks be personal?

I am so proud of them and how much they learned and shared.

Now we get to leave them all over. 

We have taken some to the lake and the park. Leaving them around a tree or by a shelter.

We have a whole coffee can full of our kindness rocks to leave around and share.

I'm just going to call this a Manic Monday!
It has been one of those days, y'all!
I could almost scream...or cry. I don't know which would make me feel better.
Today's quote is basically coined by yours truly, and I seem to be saying it a lot today!

Which is pretty much what I say whenever I just don't know what is going on or I give up trying to figure it out!

I'm not sure if the Friday the thirteenth curse is carrying over to today or what!
Today has not been my most productive.
This past weekend was filled with traveling for softball tournaments so I was already off schedule and trying to get up early today to cram in what all needed accomplished.
I already had my quote for today picked out and saved.
I could have sworn I had my pic for today's post already edited and saved.(Apparently...I did not!)
My notes jotted down, etc.
I did find those, but not useful at this point.
I overslept so the coffee my darling had made was already getting cold, as the pot is only timed to stay on for 2 hours after it brews! I know criminal...

I had to do a few things outside before the rain came...which it still hasn't 4 hours later! So, I rushed to do garden chores for nothing! But we did get a crap ton of green beans and 1 large tomato.

What's That Quote? #14

  We all have those days where we have to get things done. The things that can't wait or be put off until later.
We have those days where we say, we aren't doing anything. The days you are just too tired to even attempt the smallest tasks.

Then, we have Mondays! For me, these are the days... I will try!
I know there are a ton of things that should be getting done around here, and...I will try!

Here's how I am going to use this.

I am going to try to get my book finished today(125 pages left)

I am going to try to get the offspring in bed at a decent time tonight!

DIY Kid Craft~ Kid Made Wind Chimes

What momma wouldn't love to wean down those piles, containers, buckets, bins, bags and drawers of leftover, saved up, and collected "craft supplies"?

I know for me, it is a daily task to keep all these treasures contained and...hidden from little eyes that think every button or googly eye is the best thing since sliced bread!

But, we do have those days that we can actually find a use, a purpose for some of our ever growing supplies.

I am totally not opposed to anything you can reuse, up-cycle and DIY!

We are a frugal family, so we use what we have.

Hint* This supply list I'm going to give you is completely just for suggestions. Use what you have and make it gorgeous!

Onto our craft...

Plastic Cup Wind Chime

For Kids

I will say this took a lot of my doing...My little is four years old and there are a few things she definitely couldn't have done by herself or unsupervised.

Supply list:

plastic cup(any size/color)

yarn, twine, thread

hole puncher

pipe cleaner(1 per wind chime)

beads(thicker thread needs bigger hole in beads)

needle(same as above, thicker yarn will need larger eye to thread)

embellishments-stickers, glitter glue, foam stickys, etc

Assembly:

First you will take your cup and puncture a hole into the bottom(small) for the pipe cleaner to go through. (Good luck mommas! PSA: the cup will collapse under pressure while you are puncturing!)

Twist an X with the pipe cleaner to join two ends. Insert into hole of cup.

This will be your handle or ring to hang your wind chime by.

It should look like this:

Next you will use your hole puncher to make 3 holes evenly spaced around the rim of cup.

Now lay the cup aside.

Cut your yarn/string the length you wish(we did 10, 12, and 14 inches) remember you'll need extra to tie both ends.

Tie one end off larger than your bead holes. a couple knots should do.

Start beading, leaving a couple inches to feed through punched holes and tie to your cup.

Make three of these. We did ours three different lengths.

After you have them all beaded, proceed to tie them to your wind chime through the holes in your cup.

Your wind chime is complete! Now you can always add any other decorations you'd like!

Aren't they just the cutest?!?!

Super Easy Summer Craft For Kids~Paper Plate Fans

I am dying in this heat!

Here in Ohio, the last three days have been above 90F.

I was not made for Winter...but this heat, no rain, no breeze is about to kill me.

I have this very persuasive four year old that is determined we are going to do a craft every day..Every. Single. Day. this week. OUTSIDE!

Yes, she is also very specific. 

So...an outdoor craft that is quick, easy, and...cheap!(saving up for my iced coffee!)

I jump over to my wonderful Pinterest board filled with tons of great ideas. Seriously, my biggest addiction next to my babies and coffee!

By the way...She is awesome! Check out her stuff! I have been following her for awhile and she always has something new.

These are so cute and easy to make.

The supplies are things you probably already have on hand. Bonus!

Supply List:

paper plates

popsicle sticks or "crafting sticks"

Elmer's glue or glue gun and sticks

crayons, paint or markers

scissors(my brain is melting. I just had to google...how to spell scissors!)

optional:

stickers, googly eyes, stencils, foam stamps...

Directions:

Cut plates in half(2 fans)

Decorate, design and embellish your half plate

If using paint or anything glued, wait until dried.

Glue 2 popsicle sticks into a "V"(wider is better) for gripping your fan/handle

Then glue the other 2 ends to the back of your "fan"

(press firmly)

Allow to dry

Fan away!!

So, I survived the heat and we got them all finished. I think we made about 8 in total. I even got the middle daughter to join in!

They turned out super cute and...very useful!

Now...fan mommy!
